Who We Are

Beal Street Academy is the only specialized learning academy on the South Shore serving middle and high school students who have been diagnosed with learning and/or emotional disabilities, and who have not achieved academic success in school.  Our goal is to provide a comprehensive curriculum that is individualized to meet each student’s unique personalities and learning needs.  We aspire to have students become active participants in the learning process and in their lives today and forever.

What We Do

We employ the unique educational/behavioral teaching methodology Precision Teaching.  Precision Teaching is used to achieve measurable results both in the classroom and beyond.  Through small group and individual instruction students participate in a comprehensive, well-balanced curriculum.  We emphasize instruction in the areas of core academics, social/emotional development, computer technology, creative arts, physical education, health/nutrition, transition planning and employment.  Therapeutic needs such as OT, speech therapy, and PT are met through a collaborative consultative model.  Through practice, support and feedback, our students become informed participants in their education and become prepared for life in the 21st century.

Our Students' Goals

Our students' goals are to gain the skills for: employment; post-secondary technical school; college; and life beyond.

History

Beal Street Academy was founded through a unique collaboration between Richard McManus, the staff of the Fluency Factory tutoring center, and several parents of children receiving tutoring at the Fluency Factory.  Prior to going to the Fluency Factory, these children struggled in their education, leaving them unhappy and frustrated.  We are proud to say that the tutoring provided by the Fluency Factory helped the children reach unexpected levels of learning.  The parents, happy with the enormous success their children experienced, first encouraged Richard to start a new school, and then were instrumental in helping Richard and the Fluency Factory staff to establish the Beal Street Academy.

In the short time since inception, our students have gained abilities far beyond their previous expectations in reading, composition, and mathematics.  Their new skills led to confidence that helped our students become calmer, more social, better-behaved individuals.  They have become eager, inquisitive learners who work together to solve problems and learn new skills.

In early September 2009, Beal Street Academy received a certificate of Provisional Approval from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  This first level approval enables Beal Street Academy to accept referrals from cities and towns in Massachusetts, thereby greatly expanding the number of children who can potentially be helped by attending the school.
